Why is it so difficult for us to trust - ourselves, others, what the universe is giving us; why trust that ‘bad’ things that happen to us are all for a reason? Really, we think, who needs sorrow and pain and misfortune? We have had enough lessons in this!
I think it is difficult to accept and trust what is being placed into our lives because we are glued to the news which is filled with deeds of mistrust, bad events, catastrophes and meanness, and mostly, of the unknown. What is going to happen next? We have no control over anything, it seems.
How can we trust when our world, it seems, is based on suspicion, on mistrust and doubt? I think because we feel we need to have control over something, we sometimes place ourselves into a small box just because it is comfortable, and we do not venture out, take a risk, try something new. It seems just frightening, not exciting. We push back and are left unhappy and worn out. Just think what happens if you are on the shoreline and try to push back the waves. It cannot be done and you end up exhausted. That is what happens when we fight the misfortune, aggravation, and loss that come into our lives.
How do we pull ourselves up and move on?
Consider this: when we allow ourselves to trust and have unconditional openness, a whole new world opens up for us. We let in new ideas and people who have something important for us, and abundance just flows.
In Deepak Chopra’s book, The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success, Day Four is about the Law Of Least Effort. He talks about how “the world, nature is intrinsically effortless – how birds don’t try to fly, they just fly. Flowers don’t try to grow, they just grow. And it is the nature of babies to be in bliss.” This is the gift of just being and trusting in what is inside of us, so that we can allow ‘good’ things to flow into our lives.
When we give ourselves permission to trust our instincts, our inner voice, we become so much more happy and open to what we are meant to be. If we step back and accept what is happening to us, even though we feel it is not ‘good’, in that acceptance there is a relief -- a lessening of this self-imposed pressure of trying to control everything.
How do you learn to trust and to fly?
Start with a deep breath, (yes - go on and do it!), picture where you want to be and what you want to be doing. Then, and most importantly, go inside and find that feeling you felt when you did trust, when you decided to take a leap of faith and go for it. It is there- just remember it and what it felt like. You can now duplicate that feeling about what is it you want to do, and what you want to trust. Is it taking a new job? Is it having a new relationship? Is it picking yourself up after a loss and starting over? Most likely you have done it in the past, so you can certainly do it again. These little exercises will get you started.
So just let it go, take in and accept whatever today brings you. To be able to spread our wings and fly into the unknown with a sense of excitement, knowing it will all work out – this is how we will get to love our lives.
